Up in the Air

Issue No. 2184

This film stars George Clooney as a corporate “downsizer” as he travels the world, sacking workers for bosses too scared to do it themselves.

He revels in his isolation, giving motivational speeches about the joy of being alone with no connections.

Until one day... well, you can guess the rest.

The film does more than make the obvious point that jetting around the globe firing people isn’t much fun for anyone.

It also intercuts the fictional narrative with documentary interviews with ordinary people who have been laid off during the recession.

Through them, as much as through the main narrative, it explores the potential that human relationships have to transcend the muck life throws at us.
