PCS union plans fight for jobs

Issue No. 2184

The national executive committee of the PCS civil service workers’ union is to meet this week to finalise its response to the government’s plans to attack workers’ redundancy terms.

The union could launch a strike ballot of more than 270,000 members to defend their conditions under what is known as the Civil Service Compensation Scheme.

The government wants to massively reduce the payouts workers get when they lose their jobs, clearing the way to sack thousands in an attempt to cut the budget deficit.

Members’ meetings last summer were clear that the PCS should fight this attempt to make ordinary people pay for the recession.

The PCS needs to launch an industrial action ballot as soon as possible, while activists need to mobilise the biggest possible yes vote and press for sustained and hard-hitting strikes to win.
