Protest at Corus steel factory

Issue No. 2184

A second demonstration over the closure of the Corus steel plant on Teesside is set to take place next month.

The Unite and GMB unions are planning a joint rally in Middlesbrough on Saturday 13 February.

Unfortunately that date is two weeks after the proposed closure date of the Corus factory in Redcar, which is on 29 January.

If the closure goes ahead it will mean the loss of 1,700 jobs at the plant.

The protest will also be over six chemical manufacturing sites in the region that are under threat.

The rally comes after the “Save Our Steel” march in Redcar in July of last year, which saw 5,000 march.

That level of support shows that concerted action from the unions could still save the factory.
