Among the thousands of US troops arriving in Haiti is the 82nd airborne division – more commonly known as “the murdering maniacs” because of their torture and abuse of Iraqi prisoners, including those held at Abu Ghraib.
They were also used to bring “peace” to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. That turned out to mean forcibly removing people from their homes at gunpoint and shooting “looters”.
We should also remember the atrocities committed by UN troops in Somalia – where people were roasted over fires by the “peacekeeping” forces.
lHaitian police are urging locals to act as vigilantes.
“If you don’t kill the criminals, they will all come back,” a Haitian police officer shouted over a loudspeaker on Tuesday.
The police say they are worried about the escape of gang leaders from the local prison that was partially destroyed by the earthquake.
That prison held 4,500 Haitians in a prison designed for 800. Most of them died in the earthquake – but the media have given them no sympathy.
There is the potential for violence in any disaster zone but this is made worse by the lack of aid and help for people desperately trying to survive.
And those who think that the UN or US forces should occupy the area should look at the UN’s own record of the activities of its troops.
It admits that its troops have raped women and children in many countries, including Haiti.
UN troops have also been found to be involved in sex trafficking.
