Aid delayed by US interference

Issue No. 2185

A week into the disaster aid had failed to reach most Haitians as the US pushed aside other agencies, including the Haitian government, to take control of Port-au-Prince.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), an independent medical organisation that delivers aid to countries affected by armed conflict, and the International Red Cross both condemned the US on Monday for delaying the arrival of aid.

The US annexed the airport and started redirecting planes via the Dominican Republic, without any discussion or coordination.

This means that desperately needed aid was delayed. As Socialist Worker went to press, MSF was still waiting for the arrival of their inflatable hospital.

The hospital includes 100 beds, medical and surgical equipment and two operating theatres – a vital resource considering the damage done to the hospitals in Haiti.

It was meant to arrive by cargo plane last Thursday but was diverted to make way for US-approved flights. This included flying in US secretary of state Hillary Clinton.
