London weighting

Issue No. 1879

STRIKERS FROM a number of Unison union branches packed out a rally organised in Newham, east London, last week. It was to mark the second week of the latest phase of selective action to win improved London weighting for council workers. The Newham branch has come under attack from the New Labour council.

It has threatened to withdraw union facilities unless local officials sign up to an agreement that includes promising not to organise 'disruptive' industrial action. Strikers again showed their determination to win on London weighting. A spontaneous demonstration around the town hall left Newham council in no doubt that their attempt at union bashing would be met head on.
