Tories’ prison ship plan

Issue No. 2186

The Conservatives have a plan to appeal to the floating voter—they want to bring back prison ships.

The Tories have said they will bring back the nautical nicks so they can end the prisoner early release scheme.

The government sold its last prison ship in 2005. It held prisoners off the coast of Dorset for eight years, despite criticism at the lack of fresh air and exercise.

The Tories had planned to raise cash for new prisons by selling off old jails in “prime” locations.

But the collapse in property prices has left them forced to turn to the seafaring slammers.

The early release scheme allows prisoners to leave jail 18 days before the end of their sentence.
