Blair Peach coroner’s bias

Issue No. 2186

The incredible bias of the coroner in the Blair Peach case is revealed in new documents.

Blair Peach was a teacher and Socialist Workers Party member who died after being hit by police at an anti-Nazi protest in 1979.

The new documents, released from the National Archives, show coroner Dr John Burton ranted and raved against witnesses in the case.

He moaned about “the usual demonstrations by the usual people” outside the court.

And he accused witnesses of “fabrication” and telling “palpable lies”.

Burton planned to publish an article, “The Blair Peach Inquest—The Unpublished Story”, about witnesses’ supposed “campaign to damage the institutions of the law”.

But Whitehall officials blocked its publication after telling him it would “discredit the impartiality of coroners”.
