Campaign Iran meeting – this Wednesday

The political crisis surrounding Iran has now reached a critical turning point. The democracy movement needs immediate support as it faces a massive and intensified crackdown.

Hundreds of journalists have recently been arrested as part of an attempt by the most right-wing elements to smash the movement that emerged following last summer's election fall-out. At the same time, as Obama is increasing sanctions and sending missile 'shields' to the region, Blair used his appearance at Chilcot on Friday as an opportunity to ratchet up war on Iran (he mentioned Iran 58 times!).

Consequently there are all sorts of confused reactions to the political situation and some difficult arguments to be had. For example, understandably under pressure, some in the reform movement are looking to Western powers for support, calling for 'smart' sanctions on the Revolutionary Guards which the US is keen to take up. This means, our solidarity and anti-imperialist activity, through trade unions and other networks is vital.

This meeting will be a good opportunity to discuss what is happening and what we can do next.
