Colombia solidarity

Issue No. 1879

SOLIDARITY WITH workers in Colombia will be the focus of a series of meetings and conferences across Britain. On Saturday the TUC hosts a conference on 'Conflict in Colombia: Britain's secret war', jointly sponsored with the Justice for Colombia organisation and the War on Want charity.

Speakers included Colombian congressman and former trade union leader Wilson Borja, TUC general secretary Brendan Barber and NUJ union leader Jeremy Dear. A week later a conference on 'Resist the multinational empire-boycott Coca-Cola' will take place in the SOAS college in London, organised by the Colombia Solidarity Campaign.

It is linked to Colombian trade union leader Luis Eduardo Garcia's current tour of Ireland, England and Scotland. Luis is a leader of the Sinaltrainal union, which organises Coca-Cola workers in Colombia. The union is calling for a boycott of the soft drinks multinational because of its role in repressing trade unionists in Colombia. Luis has already spoken at a series of meetings around Ireland.

In a referendum students at Dublin's University College have voted to reaffirm their student union's boycott of Coca- Cola.
