Climate change deniers are real fakes

Issue No. 2187

CLIMATE CHANGE deniers are on the offensive. They are using small sections of correspondence between climate scientists to claim that the evidence for global warming is faked.

But it is the deniers who are manipulating the facts, in some cases telling outright lies about what climate scientists have said.

Climate scientists make no secret of the problems in compiling climate data. However, unlike the deniers, they are clear about what these limits mean.

The uncertainty is about when irreversible and catastrophic effects will happen, not if they will happen.

Man-made climate change poses a serious threat to the planet—especially to the poorest.

Denying this helps those who are wrecking the planet to carry on doing so.

The scale of climate denial has pushed climate change secretary Ed Miliband to wade into the row.

He has defended scientists who admitted they made a mistake about how fast Himalayan glaciers are melting.

Miliband said, rightly, that this “doesn’t undermine decades of climate research”.

But if he accepts that climate change is a real threat, why is his government allowing it to accelerate?

New Labour is on the side of the big polluters. It backs airport expansion and wants to see new coal-fired power stations.

It refuses to invest in renewable energy. It even allowed wind turbine maker Vestas to sack 600 workers and close its factory.

Miliband’s warm words don’t make up for that cold reality.
