THE RELATIONSHIP between Unison and the Labour Party will be a key theme at the conference of the union's United Left in London on Saturday 6 December. The United Left is the grouping which pulls together a broad spectrum of socialists and left wingers within Unison. A measure of the feelings over government policy within Unison came at a meeting of the union's official national Health Service Group Executive last week.
Members voted unanimously to call for a review of the money given by the union to the constituencies of MPs who supported foundation hospitals in last week's parliamentary vote. The union's structure means that all such funding goes through the Affiliated Political Fund (APF). So the health executive could only request that the APF carry out such a review.
The United Left conference will be addressed by George Galloway MP. The conference will also hold workshops on the struggle against low pay, and on fighting racism and fascism.
United Left annual general meeting, Saturday 6 December, 11am to 4pm, University of London Union, Malet Street, London WC1. Open to all United Left supporters.
