Rapid response to fire cutbacks

Issue No. 2188

Firefighters at Birchwood fire station in Warrington face cuts that could see them “working from home” at night.

The proposal would mean existing firefighters only working day shifts.

Currently fire stations are staffed 24 hours a day.

Twenty “retained” part-time firefighters will be added to cover the night shift – by working from home. This will add to fire response times.

Mark Lingard, secretary of Birchwood FBU firefighters’ union, said, “We believe that increased response times critically compromise everyone’s safety – the public’s and the firefighters.”

More than 45 people came to a meeting against the cuts at the fire station on Tuesday of last week. Another meeting was set for Friday of this week.
