Lecturers have called a London-wide demonstration in defence of jobs and education on Saturday 20 March.
The decision to back the protest came at a London Regional Committee meeting of the UCU lecturers’ union last Saturday.
Delegate after delegate reported on the large-scale cuts planned at their colleges and universities.
They spoke about the need to frame the campaign for jobs within a defence of education.
The FE committee voted unanimously to support a motion outlining a national strategy to defend jobs and education.
This included sending an open letter to all principals asking them to give a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies by the beginning of March.
Failure to do so would mean that UCU would ballot all colleges facing the threat of compulsory redundancies.
The committee voted to support the King’s College students’ Take Back Our Education Conference on Saturday 27 February. It also decided to organise an Education Question Time, inviting spokespeople from all the main political parties.
The committee endorsed all UCU Left London candidates who are standing for national positions.
