Yarl's Wood hunger strikers jailed

Issue No. 2189

Four women involved in hunger strikes at Yarl’s Wood detention centre have been taken to prison.

Their hunger strikes began two weeks ago as around 70 women protested against their treatment at the centre.

In response, guards locked women in a corridor without food and water.

Another group was locked outside without warm clothes.

The women are “failed asylum seekers” and refugees or those deemed to be working “illegally”.

The centre was opened in 2001 to “fast track” deportations.
