Thousands take action in Ireland

Issue No. 2190

More than 250,000 public sector workers in Ireland are on a work to rule.

The action is in protest at a programme of cuts proposed by the government.

Council workers, civil service workers and health workers are among those taking action.

The action has tapped into anger among workers.

But many are also asking whether more militant action is needed to beat the cuts.

John Kidd is a Dublin firefighter and a shop steward in the SIPTU general trade union.

“We need to start with a one day shutdown of the country,” he said.

“Everybody should come out onto the streets. This government is vulnerable and we could defeat them if we stuck together.”
