Socialist Worker

The White Ribbon DVD

Issue No. 2192

This film is set in a rural German village on the eve of the First World War.

Beautifully shot in black and white, it follows several families and the detail of their everyday lives.

Religion dominates their lives. Repression and abuse are close to the surface.

The story brilliantly gets across the sense of a village stifled and at the mercy of a handful of male leaders.

Yet it also includes people rebelling, often women, although it leaves the outcomes unknown.

The film casts a fascinating spotlight on the abuse of power.
