Firefighters' safety fears over cuts

Issue No. 2193

Around 100 firefighters protested against fire service cuts in Norfolk last Monday outside the council’s County Hall in Norwich.

The FBU union says the cuts will put safety at risk.

Bosses want to axe as many as 50 firefighters’ jobs by reducing the number of fire crews in the county from five to four. Rural fire stations will lose their second fire engines.

Norfolk FBU secretary Jamie Wyatt said, “The proposals not only cut the number of fire engines and firefighters but also remove the attendance times for fire engines reaching certain types of incidents.

“That means there will be no time limit on how long it will take for sufficient resources to arrive.”
