Coachloads of anti-fascists will travel to Bolton this Saturday to join protests to stop the racist English Defence League (EDL) from marching.
Scores of trade unionists and local activists have thrown their weight behind the demonstration.
Daren Ireland is the regional council secretary of the North West and North Wales RMT union. “The EDL want to promote racist hatred on the streets and promote division, inequality and fascist rubbish,” he said.
“It is important for ordinary working class people to come out and show they are united and totally reject racism and fascism.”
Rhetta Moran, joint secretary of Greater Manchester Unite Against Fascism, told Socialist Worker, “Trade unionists understand that racism divides the union movement and that the fascists will see the trade union movement destroyed.
“We have to stop the EDL.”
The North West TUC is the latest body to back the protest.
Alan Manning, regional secretary of the north west TUC, presented a statement to its conference last weekend.
It reads, “As representatives of the diverse community of Bolton we wish to make it absolutely clear to the English Defence League that it is neither wanted nor welcome in Bolton.
“We take pride in the diversity and richness of Bolton’s community and utterly reject the aims of the English Defence League to sow seeds of division, intolerance and hatred.”
Delegates from a number of unions gave individual statements in support of the Bolton mobilisation.
Jane Rogers, president of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Trades Union Council, said, “The EDL are hooligans. They are another form of fascism.”
