G20 officer up in court

Issue No. 2194

The scandal of police violence during the G20 protests in April last year hit the news again this week.

Sergeant Delroy Smellie, the officer who was captured on YouTube striking protester Nicola Fisher around the face and legs, appeared in court to answer charges of common assault by beating.

Smellie claimed that he acted in self-defence in a “pre‑emptive strike”, claiming that he mistook the drinks carton she was holding for a weapon.

Meanwhile, two people each received £3,000 compensation from the Metropolitan Police for wrongful arrest after police raided a convergence centre.
