Hundreds of workers and students protested outside a board of governors meeting at Manchester Metropolitan University on Friday of last week.

They were demanding that management withdraw plans to cut 127 jobs and downgrade others.

The Unison union called the protest, where it announced that it will ballot for industrial action after a consultative ballot showed 75 percent of members are in favour of strikes.

The following day, over 100 students and workers from universities and colleges across Manchester attended a rally and demonstration called by the Education Action Network.

It has agreed to make

5 May a day of action to defend education at colleges and universities across the north west of England and to call a teach-in for 15 May.
