Strike at Nelson & Colne College

Issue No. 2195

Lecturers at Nelson & Colne College in Lancashire struck on Monday as part of a long-running dispute with management over pay.

College bosses are refusing to honour a pay deal that was agreed six years ago.

“We’ve had a really good turnout of lecturers on the picket lines,” said Alison Gander, chair of the college’s UCU union branch.

“Students came to show support and people in cars tooted us and stopped to talk.

“Management could have prevented this strike. They have disrupted the college by refusing to talk to us.

“The strike is solid and we’ve had messages of support from all over the country.”

Lecturers were set to meet on Thursday of this week to decide their next steps.

They should look to co-ordinate their action with other groups fighting back.

Around 40 people protested in Penrith on Thursday of last week demanding University of Cumbria bosses safeguard the Newton Rigg campus.
