Left challenge at NUS conference

Issue No. 2197

This year’s National Union of Students (NUS) conference takes place against a backdrop of huge cuts in higher education—but of revolt and struggle too.

Mark Bergfeld is standing for vice president of higher education, and for the “block of 15” executive.

He told Socialist Worker, “The left has been on the front line of resistance against cuts to education—across the country.

“We want a national union that represents that spirit.

“Also, the rise of the British National Party and the English Defence League is a big concern. The NUS is trying to abandon no platform, but the fight against the Nazis is more important than ever.”

Activists are also hoping to win a motion that will pledge the NUS to support a national demonstration against education cuts.
