Lord Ashcroft might grab all the headlines – but the Tories have plenty of other super-rich backers.
Companies linked to shadowy Swiss banker Henry Angest have handed the Conservatives more than £7 million in donations and loans, it was revealed this week.
This makes him one of the party’s biggest backers.
Angest, worth at least £45 million, is a former Tory treasurer – and one of the top 40 richest bankers in the City.
He rails against Britain’s “punitive tax system” – but declines to comment on whether he is a “non-dom” tax avoider.
Most of his donations were funnelled through his “private bank” Arbuthnot Latham & Co, which was run by convicted Tory liar Jonathan Aitken.
He also funds a network of hard Thatcherite groups through City firm Flowidea Ltd, including obscure thinktank “Global Britain”. The thinktank is run by UK Independence Party (Ukip) leader Lord Pearson.
Ukip claims Angest is a “fine egg” who is working to push the Tories even further to the right.
