Socialist success in NUS elections

by Dave Sewell
Issue No. 2198

The National Union of Students yesterday announced the results of elections for its executive, which were held at its recent conference.

Mark Bergfeld, standing as part of the 'For a strong, campaigning and democratic union' slate, was elected to the “block of 15” executive members with the second highest vote.

Mark, a prominent Essex University activist and member of the Socialist Worker Student Society, came just four votes behind the Labour Party candidate.

Mark’s victory was down to his record of campaigning on the ground as well as the impact he and his supporters made at conference. They called on NUS to support industrial action, oppose the war on terror, and match its anti-fascist rhetoric with a real commitment to stop the BNP and EDL.
