Northumberland College shut by strike

Issue No. 2199

Lecturers shut Northumberland College when they struck on Thursday of last week.

The workers in the UCU union are fighting job cuts, pay cuts and rises in working hours.

They voted by over 90 percent for strikes. Around 100 strikers picketed the college.

Bosses want to make 67 academic staff redundant and increase the working hours of remaining workers, while cutting the amount that workers can earn.

The college has the cash to keep its workers and doesn’t have to make cuts.

Senior management salary costs at the college grew by a staggering 94 percent between 2007 and 2009.
