South African singer Letta Mbulu, was born and raised in Soweto and travelled to the US in the mid 1960s as an exile from the apartheid regime.
She displayed an early talent for joyful, memorable songs.
But record companies were sceptical, believing that few Americans would be able to understand the lyrics.
This album for the Fantasy label is an exception.
The result is a mix of funk and African sounds, which blend beautifully, not just on the club tracks but on exquisite pieces such as Kube.
