Eamonn McCann, a veteran anti‑imperialist campaigner and socialist, got a fantastic 7.7 percent vote in Foyle, Northern Ireland. He stood as part of the People Before Profit coalition taking nearly 3,000 votes.
The winning candidate, Mark Durkan, of the SDLP said, “The fact that only one candidate in this constituency, Eamonn McCann, increased his vote is a message to us all.”
The general election in Northern Ireland is dominated by sectarian division, but Eamonn stood against public sector cuts and for working class unity.
As Eamonn put it, “The bigger the vote I pull, the louder the message that it’s possible to go beyond Orange versus Green and bring people together on a basis which has nothing to do with the community they come from but reflects working class interests across the board.”
