EDL to target Newcastle

Issue No. 2201

The racist English Defence League (EDL) have called their next national mobilisation against Muslims for Newcastle on Saturday 29 May.

North East Unite Against Fascism (UAF) is hosting a unity demonstration to oppose the EDL’s racist message.

The UAF group involves activists from the trade union movement, the Labour Party and Green Party, the Muslim and Christian communities and various other local organisations.

Yunus Bakhsh, who is helping to co-ordinate the event, told Socialist Worker, “Thousands of leaflets are going out.

“We want to invite everyone from Newcastle and the region to come and defend the rights of our Muslim brothers and sisters and celebrate our city’s diversity.

“We do not want to allow the EDL to run riot like they have done in other cities.”

County Durham UAF, Teesside Coalition Against Racism and Northumberland Against Racism are also involved in building the protest.

Activists are visiting a range of organisations in the coming week to invite them to come on board.

A letter is also going out to trade union branches across the region.

Scotland Unite Against Fascism is planning to bring coachloads of people to Newcastle to support the unity demonstration.
