Support for justice for victimised students grows

Activists explain why they are backing the Sussex Six

Issue No. 2202

Tom Wills

Tom Wills is the president of Sussex University Student Union. It fully supports the campaign for justice for the Sussex Six. It is sending representatives to all of the hearings to see that the students are treated fairly

‘We hope that the disciplinary panel will see the university’s charges as baseless.

If management get away with holding individuals to account for collective action then that would have worrying implications for staff and students fighting back against cuts.

If the students win I think we’ve proved that these disiplinaries were desperate and a sham, and that management are powerless to stop coordinated action by staff and students.’

‘I pledge my full support for the six Sussex students facing disciplinary hearings.

It seems clear that by pursuing disciplinary action and singling out the students in this way, the university seeks to deter others from making a similar stance in the future.

These students have rightly taken a strong stand against the 112 job cuts and have run an incredible campaign that has received widespread support.

In the wake of the fresh demonstrations, the university management must now show willingness to listen to the concerns of students and staff, and take immediate action to remedy this situation.’
