Shift work can cause cancer

Issue No. 2202

A report by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has revealed that nearly 2,000 women contract breast cancer every year in Britain because they work shifts.

More than 550 are estimated to have died due to night working.

One study found that women were at a 36 percent greater risk of breast cancer if they had spent 30 years working nights compared to day jobs.

In total more than 8,000 cancer deaths a year were attributed to employment.
