Media workers in the Bectu union held their annual conference last weekend. We discussed the impact of a Tory-led government.
There is concern about job cuts and attacks on media services.
Conversations in the bars were political – why Labour lost the election and where the left should turn.
The union leadership conceded that they did not like what Labour has done but did not support disaffiliation from the party – a motion for this fell.
A significant number of delegates spoke about why they had joined the Labour Party since the election and how the defeat could push the party to the left.
Delegates celebrated the BNP’s defeat in Barking and across the country. But the message from the fringe meeting organised by Expose the BNP was that we cannot be complacent about the fascists.
Delegates also expressed anger at top managers’ high wages and bonuses while ordinary workers work long hours on low pay. Many argued that Bectu, with other unions, must prepare to fight the cuts.
