The Essex Education Activist Network held a rally against education cuts at the University of Essex just 12 hours after David Cameron had been declared the new prime minister

The demonstrators condemned the Liberal Democrats for allowing Cameron to form a government that has made clear commitments to cuts in the public sector. Students held placards with slogans attacking the Conservative’s plans for cuts, and promising a campaign to stop them. The demonstration was called at short notice to voice anger at the new government’s plans.

Essex Students Union campaigns officer Nathan Bolton, speaking in a personal capacity, said, “All three parties talked about cuts, but the Tories promised the deepest ones. It is outrageous that the Liberal Democrats, who claim to be progressive on higher education, have chosen to prop up a Conservative government. There is simply not a mandate for massive cuts in education.”
