Ending the detention of children of asylum seekers will not alievate their misery or prevent their deportation.
That is shown by the case of Sehar Shabaz and her 10 month old daughter Wania, who were deported last week.
Sehar was fleeing domestic violence in her native Pakistan.
Wania was the last child in Scottish custody after the SNP government decided to stop holding children in detention.
But mother and daughter were driven for 11 hours to Yarl’s Wood detention centre in London, where they were held for three days—then deported.
The Scottish government claimed that the ending of child detention was to help the children of asylum seekers and refugees. But Sehar and Wania show that the policy is about fast-tracking deportations.
The Tories are set to bring in this policy in England and Wales. The result will be the same. Behind claims of helping, they will be deporting people to fulfill their racist electoral promises.
