Reports of repeated contact between the US and Israel in the run-up to Israel’s assault on the Freedom Flotilla give an insight into the sheer audacity of the attack.
The Washington Post newspaper quoted PJ Crowley, a state department spokesperson, who confirmed that the US had “communicated with Israel through multiple channels many times regarding the flotilla.
“We emphasised caution and restraint given the anticipated presence of civilians, including American citizens.”
The US is calling for an “investigation”—but has refused to condemn Israel. It tried to persuade Israel to show “restraint” because it didn’t want the international outrage that the attack provoked.
This has less to do with concern for Palestinians and those who support them and more to do with keeping the heat off the US’s faithful friend.
