Is BP's relief well safe?

Issue No. 2206

BP plans to dig a relief well 18,000 feet below the surface and then drill sideways into the blown-out well and plug it with cement.

The company and the US government rushed through environmental reviews to allow this to happen.

The relief effort could be exposed to the same risks that caused the original well to blow out.

It could potentially create a worse spill if engineers were to accidentally damage the existing well or tear a hole in the undersea oil reservoir.
