Derby car payment fight accelerates

Issue No. 2206

Derby council workers left their cars at home last week to show the impact that not using their own cars for work would have.

They used pool cars and public transport to get between home visits instead. The pool cars cost the council £8,000 a week.

The council, run by a Tory-Lib Dem coalition, wants to remove a £98.25 monthly travel allowance and cut mileage rates.

The council says removing the allowance will “save” £800,000 a year. But it has just spent £1.2 million on consultants – to help it make more cuts.
