Activists organise against a planned English Defence League rampage in Wembley

Activists in Brent and Harrow in north west London have sprung into action after hearing that the English Defence League (EDL) is planning to come to their borough.

The EDL wants to protest against a peace convention at the Wembley Arena on 26 June organised by the Al-Khair Foundation.

The foundation is a charity that raises international aid and delivered relief to Haiti and Kashmir. The convention aims to “remove misconceptions, false fear and hate of Islam and Muslims”.

Sarah Cox, who was central to organising the protests that drove the EDL out of Harrow in 2009, said, “We have seen the EDL off before and we will see them off again.

“They claim to oppose one speaker at a conference promoting dialogue between faiths. This is an excuse to target Wembley’s Muslim community. We have to unite to say racists and fascists are not welcome.”

Brent and Harrow Unite Against Fascism is organising a counter-protest and has launched a statement opposing the EDL which has been signed by leading figures in the borough.

The BNP is standing in a by-election in the Goresbrook ward of Barking and Dagenham council. Richard Barnbrook is the BNP candidate. UAF has called a day of action on Saturday 26 June. Meet 11am, Jazzie Jake Caribbean Restaurant, 8-10 North Street, IG11 8AW.
