Pressure from activists has forced Israel to ease its blockade of the Gaza Strip.
It said that it would replace a list of previously banned items—which included some food, domestic equipment and building materials—with a shorter, specific list of “weapons and war material”.
This follows the outrage that greeted Israel’s murder of nine peace activists on the Freedom Flotilla, who were attempting to break the siege of Gaza.
But the blockade remains in place, and it will still stop anything Israel defines as “materials that can strengthen Hamas’s military machine”.
Dockers in Oakland, California, refused to unload an Israeli ship for 24 hours last week as a show of solidarity with Gaza.
