Bolton MP speaks out over protest

Issue No. 2207

Bolton’s newly elected Labour MP, Yasmin Qureshi, has added her support to the campaign to defend activists charged during the Unite Against Fascism protest in Bolton in March.

“I did not see or hear any activity among the protesters that I would have described as violent disorder,” Qureshi told the Bolton News, of the demonstration against the English Defence League.

“Though there were some police officers who, in my view, were being heavy-handed in some cases.”

Among the 70 arrested at the demonstration were UAF national joint secretary Weyman Bennett and Greater Manchester joint UAF secretary Rhetta Moran.

The potential charges include “conspiracy to incite violent disorder” which carries a lengthy prison sentence.

A campaign was launched, addressed by Peter Hain and others in parliament last week calling for all the charges against those arrested on the UAF protest be dropped.
