Housing benefit cap hits poorest

Issue No. 2207

A squeeze on housing benefit will force many of the poorest into smaller and more crowed accommodation.

Housing benefit will be capped at £280 per week for two bed properties and £400 a week for four bed houses.

This is less than the rent for the average working class home in parts of London and some other cities.

Unemployed people face a 10 percent cut in housing benefit after 12 months from April 2013 under plans hidden away in the budget report.
