Tories keep 28 days terror law

Issue No. 2208

The Tory-Lib Dem coalition has renewed New Labour’s policy of 28 days’ detention without charge for terror suspects. It shows its claim of being in favour of greater liberties is a sham.

The Lib Dems called for pre-charge detention to be limited to 14 days in their election manifesto.

The Tories indicated that they were for lowering the time limit.

Former shadow home secretary Dominic Grieve said in 2008, “28 days is much longer than I would like to see a person detained pre-charge.”
