Around 250 trade unionists and other activists met for the annual conference of the National Shop Stewards Network on Saturday.
The vicious budget cuts provided the background to the day. FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said, “We need united action across the unions to defend public services.
“We need to expose the class nature of the budget and the recession. It’s about cutting the poor and disciplining the working class.”
He backed calls to pressure the TUC into calling a national demonstration against cuts.
Steve Hedley, London RMT regional secretary, attacked the anti-union laws and said that they needed to be defied.
Local activists spoke about their experience of resisting attacks.
The conference was presented with a statement that called for action over the cuts and for a lobby of the TUC conference if it did not call a demonstration.
Unite member Raymond Morrell welcomed a clause in the statement which supported working with other anti-cuts groups. He mentioned the success of the budget day protests organised by Right to Work and others.
