Manchester College lecturers struck and marched round the city centre on Wednesday of last week over the derecognition of the workers’ UCU union.

Bosses want to push attacks on jobs and education.

“It felt good to stand on the picket line this morning”, said Mike, a UCU union member from Manchester College, addressing a 100-strong rally.

Alan Whitaker, president of the UCU, also addressed the rally.

He said, “When our jobs and livelihoods are at risk, taking to the streets is good, it brings a sense of empowerment.

“The college principal, Peter Taverner, has made a bad mistake derecognising our union.

“This dispute is of national significance and the union is right behind you.

“When you take further action next term I will be up here alongside you.

“This union is here to stay.”
