British soldier speaks out against the war

Issue No. 2209

The British army uses up and spits out young working class men in pursuit of their bloody, illegal wars.

This is the shocking reality revealed in Socialist Worker this week by Ross Williams—a former soldier who was injured while serving in Iraq and subsequently abandoned by the army.

Ross grew up in an unemployment hotspot. The army promised him a job and a future that his hometown of Neath in South Wales couldn’t.

“I joined the army because there is nothing here in Neath—no jobs, and no future,” 22 year old Ross told Socialist Worker.

He joined the army believing he would be doing some good in Iraq. Ross sees things differently now.

“The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are illegal,” he says.

Ross found that once injured, the army had no use for him.

Despite being told that he might be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, the army put Ross in Colchester military prison for going absent without leave.

Now Ross, feels “betrayed”.

“These generals and the government ministers don’t give a shit about us,” he said.

Ross has decided to tell Socialist Worker his story.
