Eric Pickles, the Tory communities ministers, has launched an attack on “non-jobs” created by councils.
But plans by flagship Tory council Barnet, north London, reveal the real agenda for local government.
They want to attack to very idea of public services and hand them over to private companies to be run for profit.
Under Barnet council’s “Future Shape” programme every service is being put up for privatisation.
This is the reality of the “Easycouncil” model based on the low cost airline.
Many services won’t even have the option of an in-house bid to retain them as council provided services. This includes finance, libraries, pay roll, pensions, and revenues and benefits.
The council wants big multinational companies to take over the vast bulk of council services.
“It’s complete madness,” John Burgess, Barnet Unison branch secretary, told Socialist Worker.
“The way they have set this up, we’ll be left with just 300 staff out of 3,000 who currently work for the council.”
“People are angry that they don’t count after working so hard. There’s a sense of betrayal. We had a packed emergency union meeting last Thursday.
“The fightback has started.”
