Unpaid wages denied to Jarvis workers

Issue No. 2210

Rail workers at the collapsed Jarvis maintenance company have been told they will not receive a penny of the unpaid wages they are owed.

Bill Rawcliffe, the RMT rail union convenor for Jarvis, said, “Its disgraceful. Some people were expecting up to £3,000 in wages.

“Network Rail is either sitting on our wages, or has given the money to Jarvis’ administrators, Deloitte, who have used it to pay off other creditors ahead of us.

“Workers are always at the bottom of the queue.”

Even former Jarvis workers who have found new jobs are finding things difficult.

Bill explains, “Babcock Rail has been given some of maintenance contracts that Jarvis had.

“They have taken on some former Jarvis staff but with basic salaries up to 30 percent lower.”

Yet Network Rail’s outgoing chief executive, Iain Croucher, recently received a bonus of £641,000, on top of a basic salary of £613,000.

“So much for Cameron and co saying we all have to share the pain,” says Bill.

“It’s being borne by those at the bottom.”
