Back Jerry Hicks for Unite leader

Issue No. 2212

The campaign to get rank and file candidate Jerry Hicks onto the ballot paper for the general secretary election in the Unite union, is gathering pace.

The others standing in the election are the candidate of the right, Les Bayliss, Gail Cartmail and Len McCluskey.

While McCluskey is on the left, he has followed the present leadership’s strategy that has failed to stand up to the bosses’ onslaught.

Jerry needs a combination of 50 branch and workplace nominations. The nomination period lasts until the end of August.

“It is urgent that we get as many nominations as possible,” Jerry said. “I’m very busy campaigning around the country.

'We’re picking up nominations from branches on the Amicus side of the union that didn’t back us in the election last year.'

The Unite executive committee (EC) this week voted to back Ed Miliband in the election for Labour leader.

Jerry, who believes the union should back Diane Abbott, said, “Joint general secretary Tony Woodley has said that he personally could only back a candidate who supported the repeal of the anti-union laws.

“It’s a travesty that the EC backed a candidate who was part of the government that blocked that repeal.”

The Unite general secretary election will take place in October when 1.7 million members will be balloted. Activists should be inviting Jerry to their meetings.
