The firefighters’ FBU union warns that fire bosses’ efforts to reduce the amount of money spent on responding to automatic fire alarms could cost lives.
Scottish fire chiefs want to bring in charges for “false call-outs” caused by the alarms in public buildings.
And bosses in Lancashire want to stop sending out firefighters unless someone has seen the fire.
At the moment fire engines are sent out when these alarms go off. With cuts looming, bosses wanting to save cash are calling this “wasteful”.
The FBU opposes these plans, as well as proposals to charge for call-outs to non-fatal car accidents.
