Sign Right to Work statement

Trade union leaders, MPs and campaigners have added their names to a statement of support for the demonstration at the Tory party conference in Birmingham on 3 October

Issue No. 2214

Trade union leaders, MPs and campaigners have added their names to a statement of support for the demonstration. It has been called by Right to Work, backed by three trade unions—the PCS, NUJ and UCU—and the Labour Representation Committee.

Signatories so far include Tony Benn, Labour leadership contender Diane Abbott, PCS union general secretary Mark Serwotka, MPs John McDonnell, Caroline Lucas and Katy Clark, community activist Bob Holman and author China Mieville. The letter expresses “outright opposition to the current policy of austerity pursued by the coalition government.

“Far from us ‘all being in it together’ Britain is scarred by poverty and inequality levels which are among the highest in Western Europe. The budget deficit is not ‘our’ debt. It is the result of bailing out the bankers,” it says.

The London Region of the Communication Workers Union also supported the protest last week.
